Two hours west, the world’s only truly wild horses come off the hills toward water as the afternoon cools. Time the drive so you arrive when they do.

The expedition

The Gobi is not a day trip. Except when it is.

Elsen Tasarkhai’s dune belt is a long day from the city, camels included. The Gobi proper asks for days in a 4x4 and nights in ger camps. Both kinds are below, priced and rated by the people who went.

The gateway

Every Mongolian road starts in Ulaanbaatar.

You land here and you leave from here, so give the capital a day: Gandan’s morning chants, the jeep run up to the Zaisan overlook, cashmere at source, and a night of throat singing before the steppe takes over the itinerary.

Price the trip

In Mongolia, $150 buys the whole Gobi day.

Every tour on the site, sorted by what it actually costs. The spread is wider than you’d guess — and the cheap end is not the boring end.

Nowhere else

Takhi, two-humped camels, horses that outnumber people.

Plenty of countries sell horse rides and desert sunsets. Wild takhi herds, Bactrian camels and a saddle culture older than the statue’s namesake belong to Mongolia alone.

The last wild horse

The Takhi of Hustai

Przewalski’s horse vanished from the wild in the 1960s and was rebred from a handful of zoo survivors; Hustai’s hills are where Mongolia set it loose again. Come late afternoon the harems file down toward the water — stocky, dun-coated, and entirely indifferent to your lens.

Herd speed

A Nation on Horseback

At Naadam, the jockeys racing twenty kilometres across open steppe are children, and nobody here finds that remarkable. Riding is not an activity slotted between museums in Mongolia — it is how the country still works, and one hour in a Terelj valley makes that obvious.

Two humps

The Bactrian Camel

The Gobi’s camel is the two-humped, wool-coated original, built for minus thirty rather than postcards. At Elsen Tasarkhai the herders walk you out across the dune belt where sand, steppe and forested mountain sit in a single view.

When to come

Mongolia gives you four honest months.

Mid-June to late September the steppe is green, the ger camps are up and the multi-day runs actually run. In winter it can hit minus thirty — yet the statue still gleams, the city still tours, and Terelj under snow is its own argument. What runs whenever you land:
